168 innocent souls lost because of trade embargo's forcing this country into using an antiquated Soviet era fleet that is notorious for falling out of the sky.

Nobody forced them to fly an antiquated aircraft.

"Maintenance of Russian-built aircraft has been notorious for bogus parts provided by shady suppliers who have become proficient in forging tech docs, making a part look newer than it really was, extending service life of a worn component just by a stroke of pen, faking OEM QA sign-offs in mx logs and in many other value-added services. Operators oftentimes just had no other choice especially in AOG because getting support from the OEM or OEM-licensed MRO's took months and loads of money"

While i'm no supporter of US economic sanctions on any country, I dont see how this would impact this accident. They've got plenty of US hardware they bought when they were friends (including the last flying F-14s) that they can still source parts for and this airline was a venture with the russians. Those 154s are still the workhorses or most ex soviet countries and have an excellent history for a design thats nearly 50 years old.

Obviously maintenance is an issue though, the best designed planes are always just the sum of their parts.
