Beginners Swimming: Standing Up

    This is an exert from a reply to a private message. I just thought it could be beneficial, to or of some use, to other people struggling with this in the future.

    "The standing up portion is something I spend a good bit of time working on in the early beginner’s stage. Because once you can do that, then you’ll be a lot more comfortable in trying other things. Long term, you’re just going to have to get used to the sensation of not being able to stand up all the time i.e. when you get to the deep end. 

    When you’re trying to stand up, make sure to do it slowly. The natural reaction for people when they want to stand up is to put one foot forward and lift their head at the same time. This will leave you very much off balance and most of the time, you’ll need to stumble forward to regain balance.

    To stand up, try the following at a wall first, then in the shallow part of the pool.
    1. Starting from face down, flat on the water
    2. Bring your two knees up to your chest
    3. Only then, lift your head. [When your trying this away from the wall, keeping your hands out to the side to keep balance, or try a sweeping motion down to give you momentum to bring your head up]
    4. You should now be in a type of sitting position, straighten out your legs towards the floor to stand.

    Make sure to do this quite slow as the more frantic your movements, the more splash and chance of swallowing water you have."
