    Hi all,

Looking to start cycling to work but as a complete novice I'm a little nervous. Just wondering what the best cycling route is from beaumont to Dawson street, i'm particularly concerned once I start getting into city centre, not sure I want to tackle the area around Bus Áras if I come down Amien Street. Any advice would be great.

    Thanks.

It ain't too bad once you get used to it. If you cycle in early enough, traffic is light. Amiens St is the route I would take into town. Any further up the river into town and it's just as busy. Here is the route I would take...

    http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=amiens+street&daddr=dawson+street&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=53.344104,-6.267494&sspn=0.232431,0.568542&ie=UTF8&ll=53.343096,-6.253624&spn=0.014527,0.035534&z=15

    Or if you wish...

I'd go with the latter myself, but that's because I really don't like that junction at Pearse St / College Green / Westmoreland St

Yeah the bit around Busaras can seem intimidating. The bridge at Custom House Quay is the bad bit to be exact. But in saying that I've never had any near misses at all on that section. You should ride assertively. Big hand gestures. There are other cyclists who go this way and there can be safety in numbers. You could also just walk across this section until you are fully confident. It will only add another 5 mins max. to your journey.

You could go by Drumcondra and down O'Connell St. but I don't know what this route is like in the morning.

    Map.

Don't know it that well but remember city centre can be bypassed to the east now with the pedestrian bridge (ok technically no cycling) and the soon to be opened Samuel Beckett Bridge. For a lot of northside this area could eb acessed from clontarf and east wall??

Made it in in one piece this morning....went down amien street and straight over the bridge, much easier than anticipates, traffic moves slowly and loads of other bikes around. Thanks for the advise.

There will be no private cars around College Green from 27th of July. Bus priority gate thingy is happening.

All you need to do now is start racing your fellow commuters.
