Lost bag?

Am very afraid of tempting fate here, but......

I booked flights to Asia from London, as flights from Ireland were an absolute rip, 300 euro or so more. I booked with Aer Lingus to get over to London. Now, in the event that my suitcase is lost by Aer Lingus, would they be reponsible for getting the bag to me in Asia? If not, how would I go about getting it?
I know people do separate airlines all the time but it's my first time doing it so I'm pretty nervous!

If Aerlingus loose you bag (AND IT HAPPENED TO ME LAST WEEK) they will return it to you address in London, or Ireland. They won't send it to Asia.

My advice, take travel insurance!!! that way you can buy clothes and claim in on them.

Don't expect to talk to anyone in Aerlingus about lost bags, the helpline is like the road to perdition, you will only get a answer after ringing 40 or 50 times. I kid you not!, it took a week to get a lost bag from Dublin airport!!.

  • That really sucks. Just praying it won't happen. Clothes etc aren't really the issue, I have presents and sentimental stuff for friends over there as well as a prescription mouthwash and various other things I can't put in my hand luggage, and I'm staying for over 5 weeks! Is there any way you can get a bag sent on in this situation?

Aer Lingus won't check your bag through to another airline as you've purchased a seperate ticket - so you'll have to collect it in London anyway.

Bags (generally) don't get lost when going from point A to point B. Mostly they get lost when having to be transferred to different terminals/airlines etc. So having to pick it up and physically bring it to your next airline may not be a bad thing.

On the off chance it got lost between Dublin and London, as it's last destination officially (from Aer Lingus's point of view) London, delivering it within the UK is really all they would have to do.

  • Yep I know I'll have to collect it, just very paranoid in case for some reason it doesn't make it to London. Am trying not to even think about it but I thought it would be sensible to have an idea of what to do if it happened.

Well, as I said - generally point A to point B goes ok. All my bags have made it from Dublin to London without issue, and that's a lot of flights. The actual percentage that don't make it tend to be very, very small.

  • Yep I know! I always like to have a backup plan though - I guess in this situation there's probably nothing I can do if it happens :( I'll just put a big label on the bag with my name and absolute essentials in my backpack I guess!

I have a really stupid concern - they don't sell 'proper' deodorant where I'm going and I have visions of spending 5 weeks stinking in 40 degree weather. Cringe!

You really don't have a lot to worry about here. I don't think you are talking of life saving medication or anything, so if you bag gets lost you'll still survive. As d'Buffy said above you are extremely unlikely to lose a bag between Dublin and London, so you are worrying about something that is very unlikely to happen. You might as well worry about the risks of the inter-terminal bus in Heathrow getting a flat, or your deodorant exploding, or any number of other unlikely events. If your bag was checked through from Dublin to your final destination you would increase your chances of it going missing in Heathrow.

Finally, *if* (and this is a really, really, really, tiny chance here) your bag did get lost by Aer Lingus then you could always try having them deliver it on to the airline you are taking to Asia. They *might* accept it and ship it on to wherever you are flying to. It might help if you were paying a full fare and not a discounted one, but you never know it might work.
