One night holiday away from Dublin

We want to get out of dodge for a night this weekend using public transport, but we don’t want to spend all day on the road, so have limited travel time to 1 hour 30 minutes.

Can anyone suggest somewhere within an hour and half of Dublin by bus or train that would be good for a night out and with something interesting to see / do in the afternoon and / or evening?

Apologies if I have missed a relevant thread on boards.ie, but I have searched and surfed through the forums looking for the magic answer and have found nothing.

I hope some of you folk can help. Many thanks :)

Sorry for the late reply but I would recommend Belfast. Its a two hour drive though. But you can spend the day walking around the city centre, go on the big wheel, and check out the Victoria square shopping centre. And get a bus tour around the city, very interesting in a strange way.

We had a great stay at the Hilton belfast, got a great room at a great rate in a sale.
Also, the Tara Lodge hotel is supposed to be very good and reasonably priced, a mate of mine stayed there.

Yup take train from Connolly to Botanic Station Belfast. Botanic Avenue has pubs/clubs and B&B's in a nice area of Belfast. At top of the road is the Botanic Gardens/Ulster Museum and Queens Uni.
Go to Empire Bar, brilliant place. Or "The Bot".

As I live up here, Id say Belfast myself.

Price wise, nowhere in the Republic can match it, and a weekend is probably long enough first time around.

What 'interesting in a strange sort of way' means, I dont know?

I was thinking of the bus tour around the peace lines and murals. I found it strange. Tourists taking pictures of a very serious and current situation (peace lines). I found it a bit strange, but that's just me.

Great people though, I came away with a great impression of Belfast overall.
