Hi~ I'm planning to get a puppy, so I want to know
    about the Vaccinations.

When are you suppose to bring the pup
for vaccination? And how many is there?
    How long does it take?
What would be the fee for the shots?
After all the Vaccinations do you just
bring them for the annual booster shoot?
And whats the feed for that?

    Whats the cost for microchipping
    and neutering?

How often are you suppose to give them worm tablets
and when are you suppose to start giving ?

To get a dog licen, do i just go to the post office?

What insurance company do Pet Insurance?

I'm not sure, but I'd say the prices vary from vet to vet so your best option is to call in or ring your local vet and they'll help you with any questions you have.

When are you suppose to bring the pup
for vaccination? And how many is there?
    How long does it take?

It varies a bit depending on the pup so these are guidelines only.
The first vaccination is done at around 8 weeks of age.
The second vaccination is done 2 weeks later.
Then kennel cough is optional usually only done if a pup or dog is going into kennels. The vet must do a health check before any vaccination to make sure the dog or pup is able for it.

What would be the fee for the shots?

This varies hugely from vet to vet so hard to say.
Roughly €25.00 each time for each vaccination but east coast can be more expensive.

After all the Vaccinations do you just
bring them for the annual booster shoot?

You only need to take the dog in once a year after that for boosters, and kennel cough if going into kennels.

And whats the feed for that?
Between €25 and €40 all depends on the vet because it varies from place to place.

    Whats the cost for microchipping
    and neutering?

DSPCA are doing a microchipping scheme think it's still running €12.00 for a chip. Parents had their dog microchipped recently and it was €40.00 including an optional 6 weeks free pet insurance.

Neutering price varies on the vet charges and the size of the dog etc. anything from €70.00 to €150.00 ish.

How often are you suppose to give them worm tablets
and when are you suppose to start giving ?

A puppy needs regular worming Parazole is a good gentle wormer for pups then once the course of wormer is done with they need worming every 3 months or so.

To get a dog licen, do i just go to the post office?
Yep, just pop in to your local post office it's around €12.00

What insurance company do Pet Insurance?

allianz, 123.ie I think they do it now, if you Google pet insurance ireland you'll get a few of them worth shopping around.

Where are you getting the puppy from? A rescue will have started a worming regime and be able to give you all the info. you need on neutering, feeding etc.

If getting direct from the pound you might get a neutering voucher, you need to produce a dog licence at the pound before you can take a pup.

If getting from a breeder at least the first vaccination must be done already, worming will have started, vet health checks will have been done etc.

Do pick up a puppy book first the RSPCA have a small straight forward book on Puppy Care that will fill you in on the basics.

Most vital thing is to have a secure garden and to have the place puppy proofed and everything organised before the pup even arrives. It saves a lot of running around afterwards.

We have our name down for puppy classes because anything we haven't covered or don't know will be learned from there plus it will give the pup more socialising. They are well worth considering.

Another vital thing to have is a mop and bucket lol expect lots of little presents for the first while.

There are tons of pooches out there so don't rush just gather all your info together first and get all the basic stuff into the house before hand.

Here's a handy puppy list, we're picking up our new fur baby this weekend (think I've mentioned that a zillion times lol getting a bit excited). This is a check list of things to get and things to make sure are sorted.

Heavy ceramic bowls for water and food.

Dog id tag (google identitag excellent dog tags or most vets do them now but identitag has the best ones).

Puppy crate for travel and crate training.

Plastic bed with some fleecey blankets for changes.

    Puppy proofed garden.

    Collar, harness and lead.

    Dog licence.

    Vaccinations/health checks/microchip.

Safe puppy toys, puppy kongs harder rubber toys. Supervise play with teddy type toys etc.

    Newspapers and/or wee wee pads.

Plastic pet carrier if the pup is really small for transporting at first.

Good quality puppy food, feed whatever the pup has been used to at first if the food isn't great then gradually switch to a better brand.

Baby gate (if the pup is large enough not to be able to get stuck in them).

I could go on and on but I'm sure others will add to it.
It can be exciting but be prepared before hand.

When are you suppose to bring the pup
for vaccination? And how many is there?

Usually at 8 weeks, 10 and 12 weeks. Our breeder had the first vac's done.

How long does it take? Few seconds

What would be the fee for the shots? 1st one was about €50 for worm dose, flea spot on and vac. 2nd one was €61 for vac, 2 worming tablets (€6) and ear drops.

After all the Vaccinations do you just
bring them for the annual booster shoot?
    yup
And whats the feed for that?
    I would presume about 50.

    Whats the cost for microchipping
    and neutering?
Our breeder had our pup microchipped.

How often are you suppose to give them worm tablets
and when are you suppose to start giving ?
Breeder gave the first dose then we done it at 9 weeks 12 weeks and 14 weeks. First 4 doses should be 2 weeks apart after that every 3 months. Everywhere you read seems to be different. Vets differ too but thats the best advice I have gotten.

To get a dog licen, do i just go to the post office?
yes and it costs €12.70 you just tell them the breed and color of the dog, your name and address.

What insurance company do Pet Insurance?
Allianz seem to be the most popular as they deal straight with the vet and also offer 6 weeks free pet insurance. Our vet had the forms for it and they sent it off. Other than that petinsure.ie, 123.ie, and blueinsurance.ie which is yet to launch

I would advise that you ask around about a vet before visiting. Firstly we went to the one nearest, he was very rough with the dog, no patience and had another vet hold the dog down. Turns out he also gave the wrong vaccine.
The 2nd one our family had used and was a completly different experience, he talked to the dog by name, was fine for me to rub dog etc (first vet took dog completly away) . He even shielded the pup while another slightly vicious dog was leaving. Answered all our questions, even the blatently obvious ones with a smile ;)

HI! Just got my first puppy as well, so I'm really excited. And both answers really helped. I'm ok about my vet though I think. For one thing, when my sister fell off her bike outside the vets door, the vet took her in and bandaged her up for free! No need to go to the doctor, no need for xrays, and since the vet is totally used to checking on patients who can't tell her what's wrong, she had my sister fixed in a tick! So, I'm pretty happy to be bringing little Max to her!

Hi congrats on your pup. I wouldn't be worried about rip off vets though, rather a rip off breeder, 5 weeks is far too young for a pup to leave its mother. At 6 weeks he will only be able to have his parvo vacc, not the start of his 'proper' vaccinations. You will have to take him again at 8 weeks, and then two weeks later.

    5 weeks?

Like ISDW said - thats waaaaay too early for a pup to be removed from the mother and the rest of the litter.

If you can, don't delay till next week getting to the vet - do it now to make sure the pup is ok. May not be able for first vacc just yet, but worthwhile to assess how sound the pup is having been removed so early.
