Fault with Ford Focus

    Hey guys

I have a problem with my 99 Ford Focus saloon. About 2-3 months ago the car started to rev if I happened to put my foot on the accelerator hard. If I just ease it onto it then it doesn't over-rev. What could this be would you think? I've not gotten it looked at yet as to be honest I didn't think I would be able to afford to spend much on the car (with it being worth next to nothing!) but the problem has steadily gotten worse over the last while. It now seems to be over-revving everytime all the time.

I've mentioned it to one of the guys I work with and he said the "clutch might be slipping". What does that mean though? New clutch needed?

Driving the car is a nightmare at the moment, before 0 - 60 was prob about 15 secs, now its about 30 secs + :P:P:P

Any advice is appreciated, obviously I understand at this stage I'm going to have to get a professional to look at it also though!

    Thanks

Yeah it's the clutch, happened to mine last year and I got it replaced for €480. "Slipping" is a good term to describe the feel when driving so I'm surprised that you asked what he meant...

Is there an engine fault light on?

If the clutch is slipping badly, you can put the handbrake on, put the car into gear and try to drive away and the car won't stall as you'd expect it to, you can rev the engine but you won't be going anywhere even though the car is in gear.

yes it might mean a new clutch whitch should cose between 300 and 400 to get fixed. If you are getting no acceleration over 3000 revs its a sign your clutch is starting to slip. It should be OK for a month perhpas but you will notice the slip start to happen ad 2500 revs and even less as it gets worse.

Get it fixed sooner rather than later as if it goes completly you will need a tow to your mechanic. At least now you can drive it there.

    Thanks guys!

No warning lights on at all with the exception of the battery light which comes and goes!

I did kinda get what he meant by slipping but I think I was somehow hoping that I'd hear "nah there's nothing wrong with the car, you're fine!" :p

There is also horrible squealing coming out (like the wheels grinding or something!) when the car accelerates.

New brake pads are also required. Great though, just what I didn't want to do (put €500 + into the car!).

Sounds like it needs a good looking over. It's always difficult to diagnose a problem on here without a really good description of the problem...

Rarely if ever happens on here OP, usually where you have a problem you have a cause...
