No. The forms are already out. If anything there's going to be pressure to overhaul and increase it next year when fees come in.

Yeah the grant is going ahead but I wonder if the amounts will increase at all. Probably not.

Well the bord snip nua report shows that there will be cuts in grants.

    RTE:

"* Change to student support grant - €70m"

    Doesn't sound too good so . . . . .

They seem to be recommending changes to the allocation of the grant rather than outright cuts in the rate:

    1) Students eligible for the BTEA would no longer be able to apply for the maintenance grant as well. One or the other, not both.
    2) Means test to include asset test.
    3) Grant scheme should be targeted at "priority" educational areas, such as science and engineering.
    4) Scheme should be cash limited each year

I'm on the BETA and will be entering 2nd year in september.

Those this mean that I can't apply for the grant?

Will I have to pay registration fee's and the tuition fee's?

    Thanks in advance.

These are just recommendations by Bord Snip. It's up to the government whether they want to implement them in December's budget. Won't have any effect on this year.

While fees are due to come in next year in some form, as an existing student it's unlikely you'll have to pay them. People entering this year (like me) may not be so lucky.

Just get in contact with your local VEC office.
It's a sad state of affairs alright, all the first yeas getting dumped with them. Its all still up in the air though from what I can gather. I'm entering 4th year of my course in GMIT this september. Rang registration last week and she told me to expect to pay the 1,500 as opposed to our usual 900 fee so it looks as if these fee's might be coming sooner. I'm very open to correction though! :D Hopefully I'm wrong :D

Colleges are now allowed to charge up to €1500 (from €900 I think), but its up to the seperate colleges if they want to. They probably will though...
