Reseting laptop software

    Does anyone know what reseting software means? Does it mean you have to have the original software CD's for loading again afterwards? I know you have to back up your files just in case??

    Who told you to "reset the laptop software?", it's a very vague statement tbh. It could mean they want you to reinstall the Operating System ie windows, or it could mean reinstalling specific applications. It sounds like it would be a reinstall of the OS, if this is the case, you will need to backup everything you want to keep, as it will be formatted.

    Sorry for being vague. Dell technical support said they would do it for €36.
    Dell test showed there are some software issues.

    What was the origional problem? I've seen very few "software issues" that required you to reinstall the Operating System.
    This is just lowsy tech support who don't know what the issue is, and hoping that reinstalling it will fix it.

    Ask them specifically what you need to reinstall ; Operating system, application software (If so, what applications and versions) or drivers.

    It was just the battery not charging fully, (getting old-over 2 years) that prompted me to call them.

    She said it would "bring the laptop back to the way it was when I bought it."

    I'm not doing it for now anyway. But i f I contact them again I'll ask them those specific questions.

    Restoring the software to factory defaults would do nothing to effect the battery, its just getting old.

    You can probaly grab a new one on ebay without breaking the bank. Just make sure to keep it in use.

    So if its always plugged in, drain the battery to about half full, then remove it. And every now and then charge it up and run it dry.

    They wear out themseves after a few years, but you can maintain it through regular use.

    What happens if you always have the laptop plugged in? Does the battery degrade like this?
