French girl applying to BESS

    Hi all!

I am a French girl and have applied to study in TCD with BESS as my first choice on level 10 CAO form.

Maybe someone can help me but I am not sure about the requirements from TCD's side, and the application office will not reply to me , maybe they are on holidays?

Anyway, it says on http://www.tcd.ie/courses/undergraduate/az/course.php?id=2 BESS's undergraduate page that the entrance requirement is OC3/HD3 for Mathematics . As a matriculation requirement for the French examinations it says that I have to "present a minimum of 12 to satisfy course requirements where stated at higher level" here http://www.tcd.ie/Admissions/undergraduate/requirements/matriculation/other/#france.
So does that mean I need 12/20 in Mathematics or not because I understand that for Irish students, the requirement is pass in higher level paper or honour in ordinary level paper...

Thanks anyway for any help I can get, and hope to join you all in September.

By the way I got 11/20 in Mathematics :(

Sorry I'm not 100% sure - but I think that you are ok with 11/20. But, just because it meets the minimum requirement doesn't mean it will be good enough to earn you a place on the course - if enough people applying have better marks, they will take all the places.
It probably doesn't help much - but Irish students don't know their exam results yet so there are plenty of people in the same situatuin as you.
    Good luck!

your totally right it does seem very unclear especially as c3 at ordinary or d3 at higher is quite a standard requirement. Although as they say they are reviewing the process anyway so it is all quite meaningless.
I would hope the new infomation will be much clearer though when they release it.

who did you contact in admissions? or did you just send an email to the admissions@tcd.ie?????

Awesome second post - forward this thread onto the admissions office and I'm sure you'll get in.

edit: though unfortunately(?) what you have witnessed is not a pervert but what we call a "red blooded young Irish male" :D - cead mile failte!

I was reading it too but it says reviewing for 2010 admissions, and I guess she's looking to apply this summer (2009 admissions).

Maybe Donál can shed some light??

This is not really helpful but just wanted to let you know you're not the only one in this situation...I'm Italian and I've applied for BESS too...although I don't know much about the way they will assess my application (in fact the requirements for those holding Italian qualifications are even more vague http://www.tcd.ie/Admissions/undergraduate/requirements/matriculation/other/#italy )....I phoned in several times and everything they ever told me is that they are going to consider my application individually...and that's it....and they won't let me know anything before August....it's bloody frustrating, UCD operates much better and have already offered me a place....

    Hi,

Thanks to all of you for your help so far.

Hurluberlu, I have called the admissions of TCD (they would not reply to my email) and same situation: they said they will make an offer, an individual one.
I also applied for UCD. I could not get through to them yet though.
How did it work with them? Do you understand their request of a 'notarised' translation? I am a bit confused. How did you do?
How did you work out for english proficiency? On one page they require a specific level at the end of high school exam (bac for french, leaving cert for irish students), on another page, they require 100/100 at the TOEFL...
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi there,

I have submitted all the documents they required a while ago, this is what I submitted:
    • English proficiency: I sat the TOEFL Internet based and got 113/120, so that will do for TCD (the requirement is a minimum of 90 with 21/30 in the written part), and it worked for UCD as well as they already made me an offer which they wouldn't if I didn't have the requirements, right?
    • Italian qualification: I submitted my qualification with the final score and a breakdown of what my exams consisted of with the individual marks (unfortunately they're not individual grades as in grades in every subject, but rather grade achieved in my Italian essay, in the second test which is peculiar to the kind of school I chose (Greek or Latin), then a third test with four other subjects (the grade they gave is an average one though) and an oral test. Moreover, it mentiones the points I earned during my final years based on my end-of-the-year average mark and the bonus that the assessing board gives to certain students that they believe to deserve it.
    • School reports: I have translated my school reports from my last two years, got them stamped at the embassy and sent them over too.
Requirements for TCD and UCD vary. I think TCD is gonna look for my performance in Math from my school reports and use the final mark from my exam only to match me with the points to get into the course, whereas as far as I understand UCD does it this way: I took 10 subjects in my final year (as they can see from my report) and as I got 92% in my exam for them it means a grade of 92% or equivalent in all the subjects from last year.
Try and phone the UCD admission office, they're very helpful, they'll be able to tell you about your situation....I called in a couple of weeks ago and they told me that they were ready to offer me a place, and I got that offer last week. Also, they told me why they couldn't offer me a certain course but they said there's still hope for a later offer. They will tell you what to do, I recommend calling them.

    Hi Hurluberlu,

Thanks for your help. I followed your advice and rang. Could finally talk to admissions people so things are clearer. I was just wondering: did you receive your offer on a random day or was it at a specific date mentioned by CAO (they list 4 round: early, 0, one and two...)?
    Thanks,
    See you,
    Flor

Hi! The offer I received came out on July 4th, in the early offer round...
What else did you apply for, other than BESS? What did the Admissions office in Trinity tell you when you rang them up?

out of interest have they sent you any infomation out yet about orientation and freshers week etc?
i couldn't get a straight answer out of the office

No I haven't received much information at all, they are going to send it out on the 17th August when offers from round one come out....everything I know is that freshers' week starts on Monday 31st August and is compulsory; the next Monday starts the teaching term. They sent me a letter saying that as I have accepted a place in UCD Quinn I need to own a laptop with certain requirements and if I decide to buy it through them I can have it on the first day otherwise I will need to bring mine to a Laptop Clinic for them to check it....that's about everything I know..

    Hi Hurluberlu,

Trinity told me my grades were ok to have my chance (remember I was on the edge for math requirements). As for time, they said, like all the other said, something along the lines of 'you will hear from us directly'.
More interesting, although not the best news, UCD mailed me saying I will run in competition with all other applicants at round 1.
I guess I will be part of round 1 for all the schools since they received my grades a few days before round 0 and I did not hear from them yet!
Anyway, appied to TCD, UCD, UCC and NUI Galway so hopefully I will be admitted to one of them!
By the way, when did you submit your results? Round Zero is very early!

    Hi there,

I submitted my grades in early June, I think. I was told that I was meant to post them out to the CAO within one week from my application, but I got a bit lost in translation (which is exactly the case as I had to visit them embassy countless times). I phoned into TCD today hoping to find out more, but they wouldn't reveal much....so fingers crossed!

    Hey,
Yep, called them again this afternoon too and they definitely confirmed I will be part of the first round! I must say you made me hope with your early UCD notice! And you, where else did you apply?
Quite curious, apart from gamma23, we did not hear from many foreign students applying like us...
    See you,

    Hey gamma23, hurluberlu,
I was wondering, any friends of yours missing a roommate?

Many, many posts temp. deleted pending review by forum mods.

    1) Can people please report posts early on in trainwrecked threads?
    2) I don't really like stepping in on threads so while the education forums tend to be generally off-topic consider that there is someone at the start of this thread who is looking for some genuine help.

It's appeared in other threads on here but your best bet for finding a roommate is the accomodation advisory service being run by the Students' Union. http://www.tcdsu.org/?s=4&p=75
I made use of it myself a few weeks ago.

Are you going over to Ireland early to look for accomodation? It is a lot easier/better if you are able to go around and look at places.
