Well guys bought a 98 Honda Prelude 2.2vti there at the end of March now i knew before i got the car that it is fairly fond of the old oil but by god didnt know how fond it was of it. Up to date now ive done 12,000 in it and used somewhere between 20-25 litres of oil during that time having to top it up really every 2-3 weeks depending on how often i drive it and how often it is in the vtec :)

Question is,is this a normal amount of oil to use for a car of this type of car???

Does it have a modified exhaust?

25 litres is almost 50 pints, or over 12 gallons

Check your log book - is your car really the Tory Canyon? ;)

p.s. That surely is not normal.

Definitely not normal.I have a '97 type s and it only needs the smallest of top ups between services.Get it checked out anyway.

without a doubt its using too much oil!
you may have to get your vtec seals checked out or indeed the whole engine to be honest.

most DOHC vtec engines will use oil but only a very slight amount when performing at their prime.

my old Integra Type R used about 750ml-1L of oil in between 5000mile oil changes. i used to buy 3 tins of motul oil (6L) and after filling my car on the service the remainder would be enough to top it up until the next service.

if you can, get it down to the guys in the Tuning Facory.

Have you changed out the oil or do you just keep topping up?
No point in putting good new oil in on top of old stuff all the time as it wont last.

some VTEC's do use more oil than others but that is a bit excessive, my ITR has 111k miles on it now and it only uses a small bit and thats only when the VTEC gets a good run.

I'd only have to just top mine up a small bit every 2 - 3 weeks.

you should change the oil completely and put in some high quality 10w 40 and see how long it lasts.

if it goes just as quick it could be the seals unfortunately

yeah was thinking that and would be the cheapest thing to do aswell ill bring to a mechanic and get him to change the filters and that aswell and hopefully might improve things a bit.

Im guessing that getting the seals done is a big job yeah

That's not correct in my experience m8. I owned a H22A for a few years and never had to top it up between servicing. And, I was changing cam profile at every opportunity.

Was looking at it more and there is also white to dark smoke coming from the exhaust aswell which im guessing is related to it would that be right????

25 Litres is just over 5 gallons, not 12.

OP, still way too much oil to be using. If it's not leaking oil then there's really only two ways it can be burning it, piston rings/bores or valve guides. Bring it to a mechanic and get a compression test done. If the wet test shows better results than the dry test it's the rings/pistons/bores. Otherwise it's valve guides which should be cheaper as it's just a head off job rather than engine out.
