Hi, I would appreciate some advice. I am looking for a new ladies touring bike, but I do not know which one to buy. My budget is up to approx e1,700. Is there a big difference between the different makes. I am thinking of buying a giant or specialised but one bike shop has advised that they compromise on quality and rely on their name.

I currently ride a Claud Butler (the model I think is Odessy). cost approx 350e about 6 years ago and I would really like to upgrade.

I don't know enough about touring bikes to be able to help you but a lot more cyclists would see this post if it was posted in the main cycling forum rather than the Adverts sub-forum.

FWIW, I reckon you'd get a great bike for that kind of money, regardless of brand. Bike manufacturers have to remain competitive and I don't think any manufacturer can get away with trading on a past reputation. Last year, I purchased a single speed Specialised cyclo-cross bike (for €700) and 9 months later, I'm still in love with it.

Get a mod to transfer it to the main cycling forum but that budget is high enough, you could get something very nice. Giant and Specialized would not be particularly known for their touring bikes to be honest.

I have a Van Nicholas Amazon myself which I am very happy with it, very flexible, comfortable and light... probably worked out around €2,500 but you could probably get it in a bit under. Frame and fork was around €1,000 when I got it.

The boards.ie search facility should provide you with some useful links though I prefer using Google to search boards.ie e.g. this recent thread is particularly relevant to your query as it's got advice from another cyclist moving from a hybrid bike to a tourer.
