Bogey = 1 point, par = 2, birdie = 3. that is from scratch. So if you have a shot on a hole a birdie is 4 points, par 3, bogey 2 and double bogey 1. If you have 2 shots on a hole birdie is 5 , par is 4 points and so on..

so if i have two shots on a par five and i get a bogey after my two shots are taken off i get five points. and if i had one shot and bogey i would get 2 points. is that right?

I'm new to this just tryin to get it right in my head thanks for the help

    It works as follows;

    Bogey 1pt
    Par 2pt
    Birdie 3pt

The above applies if you are off scratch. If however you are off say 18 then you have a shot per hole so therefore you can score with a double bogey as with your shot it would count as a bogey (1pt). If you happened to par a hole then it would count as a birdie (3 pts).

If you have a handicap higher than 18 say 21 then on the 3 hardest holes (lowest stroke index) you would have 2 shots and therefore to score on any of these 3 holes you would have to get at least a triple bogey. On the rest of the holes you score with at least a double bogey.

With a handicap less than 18 (say 12) you only get a shot on the hardest 12 holes and no shot on the remaing 6 (on these you would have to score bogey to get a point).

It appears complicated (and maybe more from my post above) but if you are playing with most people they will guide you and you will pick it up easy enough......

ok think i have it so no matter how many shots i have on a hole after i take my shots away from my gross score on the hole it has to come back to bogey for me to score

Yes, you get one point for a nett (adjusted) bogey. Anything worse than that scores 0 (scratch)

It's the reason lots of people enjoy Stableford over Strokeplay. You can have a 13 on a hole and it's the same as having a 9... you just get 0 points. Or you can lose a ball and not finish the hole.... 0 points.
Whereas in Strokeplay every little shot counts and one bad hole can ruin a round.

No, a bogey on a par five with two shots gets you three points.

    What is your handicap?
As the guys earlier said, think of the scratch golfer (0 handicap).
He gets 18 pars... a par is 2 points.. his score is 18 x 2 =36.... happy days.

Now, you just write down your gross score on your card (the amount of shots you actually took), figure out how many shots you receive on that hole (if any) based on its stroke index and do a little calculation in your head to come up with your nett score.
If your nett score is a par then you get 2 points.
For every shot better than nett par you get one more point so a birdie is 3, eagle 4.
If you are one worse than nett par, in other words a nett bogey you get one less point... that is, 1 point.
If you are worse that that you get zero... nada... nothing.

You would need 36 points to play to your handicap.

Off 22 you receive 2 shots on holes index 1 to 4 and you receive 1 shot on every other hole.
So in theory you are 'supposed' to have 4 double bogeys on the 4 hardest holes and you bogey the other 14 holes. When your shots received are subtracted you will be left with 18 nett pars, each worth 2 points for a total score of 36 points.
Of course in the real world you'll do better on some holes and worse on others and it's all supposed to balance out.
You are in category 4 so if you play between 32 and 36 points your handicap probably won't get adjusted. Worse than 32 and you would increase by 0.1 for each round. Better than 36 and you will get cut by 0.4 for each shot better than 36 you got.
(I mention 36 above but you will be measured against Competition Scratch Score (CSS) on the day. CSS can change depending on what tees you played off and how windy or difficult the conditions were on the day but just think of 36 points until you get the hang of the scoring system!)
