I'm interested in taking a job that requires a little bit of web development, windows networking and experience with Microsoft desktop & Server operating systems..

I'm fine with everything there except Server OS.. Does anyone know if it's worth my while even applying - what's involved here?

Sounds like a dumb question but I'm not familiar with it, I'd have good experience with web developing, maintaining and building websites, databases, some coding, flash, good hardware knowledge, troubleshooting and IT support I've already been doing a while with windows desktop.. just wondering am I out of my depth here? The company will provide training etc..

    "what's involved here?"
It really depends on the role.
It could just be administering a few Active Directory, or general issues with services, ins talling stuff(printers?IIS?) or could be a lot more than that...
The best thing to do is probably grab an evaluation copy from somewhere and install it and play. If you don't have any hardware to spare then install VirtualBox.

Yes it's worth applying. But for the "what's involved" bit we need more info. What's the job spec? How many people are in the company? Are you part of an IT team or will you be on your own?

If you're part of a team they probably want you to concentrate on the development and just need a background knowledge of server. If you're on your own you can be supporting AD, backups, server issues, client issues etc. A bit of knowledge of desktops won't do there.

Either way it's no harm applying.

    Thanks.

I know someone working there and from what I gather it's not a major operation, it's a transport company and I've been told they often never get any applications in for these jobs (which surprises me).. so I'm going to chance my arm.

Am afraid that I'll be called for the interview and the server stuff will catch me out. I'm a quick learner though and I will install a trial version and play around with it.

I'm not sure of how many people working there either, I'll find out tomorrow though, I know someone in there in a different position who can shed some light on that stuff.

I'll apply anyway and ask what the job entails exactly. If I can get away with a little server experience and then they train me in + I'm working with a team I think I'd manage O.K.. :o
