Saw this on another Forum and couldn't believe my eyes :

UN CONGO MEDAL ISSUED TO IRISH SOLDIERS 1960 1st TYPE.

An original example of the medal issued to Irish Defence Forces personnel for service in the Congo between 1960 and 1963. An identical medal was issued for several different missions, the CONGO bar attached to the ribbon denotes service in the CONGO between 1960 and 1963, if there is no CONGO bar on the ribbon the medal is not for service in the CONGO.

The medal is not reproduced in its original form by the many licensed suppliers of UN medals so it is a little known medal and an original is usually only recognised by the experienced collector. Search Ebay for Irish Congo Medal and you will see just what type of rubbish is being passed as original. A good tip is look at the seller’s feedback as a buyer and you will see where the medal originated from.

An identical medal was issued for to Irish forces for UN service with UNTSO (UNITED NATIONS TRUCE SUPERVISION ORGANIZATION) UNTSO has performed various tasks entrusted to it by the Security Council, including the observation of the cease-fire in the Suez Canal area and the Golan Heights following the Arab-Israeli war of June 1967 an identical medal was also issued for service with UNOGIL - Observation Group in Lebanon, 1958.

Because the 3 medals were all the same different emblems were used to distinguish which service the medals was awarded for. The CONGO medal had the CONGO bar, the Lebanon medal had a small Cedar Tree and the UNTSO had no emblem. The image below with the medal bars shows the CONGO bar on the medal and the Cedar Tree emblem on a ribbon bar, the blue and white ribbon bar with no emblem or bar denote service with UNTSO and the last bar shows the colour of the Ribbon on the second issue Congo medal issued after 1963.

A good website for identifying UN medals is http://www.medals.lava.pl/int/int.htm they give a good detailed description of the mission and the countries which took part and is also one of the few UN medal sites which give mention to the UN CONGO bar.

As I understand it those medals are completely interchangeable, they are not marked to distinguish them apart in any way. So for a ribbon bar and ribbon to add £24,975 to the price with no provenance seems a tad high.
