Can anyone advise the shortest route to France via Britain? I'm looking at Dublin/Holyhead - Dover/Calais (cheapest & shortest ferry crossing I've found from Britain to France). Anyone done this or would suggest a better route? Is it feasible to do in a day and arrive in France in time to check into hotel/eat? Tks for advice.

it depends almost entirely on where in France you are heading.

There is an evening ferry from Portsmouth that gets into Cherbourg at around 6am. That is quite a good way to go, you can get 6 hours sleep on the boat and then get down to the loire valley by late morning.

Normandy or Brittany is the destination - port of arrival not important. Looking for the easiest/shortest route through Britain, and/or easiest/shortest ferry route. I'm not familiar with the drive from Wales to the various ports, would appreciate advice from those who have tried some of these routes.

The drive to Dover will take you at least 6 to 8 hours from Holyhead depending on time of day etc. the drive from Pembroke to Dover is about 6 hours again. If you go to Dover, you can get a ferry to Calais, Boulogne or dunkerque. Dover-Calais is the most common and takes an hour and a half.

Pembroke to portsmouth is about 4 to 5 hours and you can get ferries to Caen, St Malo and Cherbourg i believe. The crossing is longer but more relaxed.

You can also get ferries from Weymouth.

Ferry lines you should check are Brittany Ferries, LD Lines and Condor Ferries and P&O Ferries.

it's a mine field and a lot will depend on what time ferry you catch to Wales otherwise you could be waiting around for hours.

Personally, I would do Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead which gets into Holyhead at 3:30 then drive down to Portsmouth and get the 23:00 sailing with LD Lines, get a good nights sleep and arrive in Le Havre at 8am ready to go.
