Enabling voice on Meteor 3G data sim

    I've got a Meteor 3G broadband dongle.

What happens if I put the sim into an iPhone (I don't have it yet, arriving this week)? I presume that data and text messages will work fine? Is there anyway to get voice working/enabled too?

    Thanks,
    Dave

The SIM is the same, and it may work. Some of the operators disable voice services on the SIMs they sell in their midband packages (O2 do anyway, possibly Vodafone too). If it's PAYG, then you can buy any SIM (which will have voice services on it) and then purchase the midband add-on.

I don't believe that you can purchase it as an add-on though, I know that they do 99c for 50mb a day but I'd prefer to pay €20 for 5gb a month; afaik that is not available as an add-on.

I asked the meteor guys in-store and the said that the sim card wont allow voice calls :( Is there any way to enable it?

If they don't enable it then you can't.

My O2 bill pay Modem SIM would do voice calls, but at highest tarrif according to O2. I never tried it.

Unless your iPhone is unlocked it won't work with ANY Meteor SIM.

If Meteor have specifically disabled it, then no. The reason they do this, is to stop you from doing exactly what you're trying to do. They don't want the midband products to be used on handheld phones.

If you are using an unlocked iPhone (which you have to have for other than O2), there is a slight snag:
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/14/iphone_push/
Apple's notification system for the iPhone won't work on devices that have been unlocked to run on different networks, much to the annoyance of developers who are being left to explain the situation to customers.

Powerybase, authors of NotifyMe, have gone public with their frustration. The company reports that 80 per cent of its support requests now come from the five per cent of users with unlocked iPhones, which do not support the push functionality on which NotifyMe relies...

Yuck, that is a bit of a snag. Thanks for the post watty, hopefully it will be fixed soon (either officially or unofficially).
