Ryan Reynolds cast as Green Lantern

Warner Bros. has tapped Ryan Reynolds to bring the DC Comics' superhero Green Lantern to life, reports Variety. Reynolds is said to have beaten out Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) and Justin Timberlake for the hotly sought role. Don't know your comic books? Green Lantern is part of an intergalactic police force who fights baddies using a magic ring that can conjure almost anything its wearer can imagine. Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) will direct the film. Shooting is reportedly slated to begin in January. This is the second superhero franchise Reynolds has scored this summer: his cameo as Deadpool in "Wolverine" was cool enough to inspire Fox to begin developing a spin-off.

Nathan Fillion was always my pick - Ryan is an interesting choice

Funny you should say that, the fan trailer linked to in this thread was made using Nathan Fillion and was surprisingly convincing. I imagine Ryan Reynolds is assumed to be an easier sell to a wide audience. I'm more curious about who will be writing the script and directing.

surprised they went with Reynolds given Marvel are trying to develop a Deadpool film. Not that we haven't seen actors turn up in films from both DC and Marvel before but he would be the lead in both.

He was in Serenity and Slither, but is more of a TV actor I think - he's been in Buffy and Firefly, amongst other things.

Greg Berlanti is writing and possibly directing. He created the brilliant but cancelled Eli Stone and directed the very likeable Broken Hearts Club:A Romantic Comedy. Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green also worked on he script which is supposed to be very good.

Guggenheim and Green have wrote for a number of different comic characters so fingers crossed that as fans they don't make a balls of it.

Lets be honest though, all the recent coverage of the film could appear to be little more than an attempt to raise awareness of the character in preperation for the animated film released next week.

Ya not sure if this is a good choice, while he might suit Deadpool because of his sense of humour and his sarcasm, always thought of Hal Jordan as a bit more serious than that, and as people said above having the same actor play the main role in two superhero movies that will be released close together seems like a bad idea, as it will make both characters less unique, might even confuse ppl and ppl might expect him to deadpool when they watch Green lantern or vice versa. And he probably play both characters the same making this even worse.
