Hi i am wondering if any one here could give me information regarding long distance running and increasing my stamina.

I am a sprinter at heart, i jog now and again, but my long distance is terrible. I have been told that by sometimes just repeating the same routine of jogging and running that it can have a negative effect and that i should try interval training to increase power and endurance, though the many differing opinions have left me a little confused and would love some solid advice.

    thank you.

long runs build aerobic capacity fact. Science shows that a steady improvemnet can be made over 18 months after that will not see any improvement without different forms of training. Interval training can be beneficial after enough strength is built up to cope with the training after two or three months. Interval training at a high intensity cannot be maintained for long periods of time after about 2 months burnout can lead to chronic fatigue, poor performance and possible injury.
Hope this gives you a bit of insight

    Hi Doctor,
Intervals certainly have a part to play in increasing power and speed endurance. However if you want to be a long distance runner you simply have to lay down a solid aerobic base - i.e. plenty of miles. Only then will you have the building blocks in place to make the most of shorter distance work.

So generally (as I don't know exactly where you're at) you should be running slowly and steadily several times a week with, usually, one run pushed out rather further - your long slow run (LSR). Keep it slow. I suspect that you're suffering and thinking you're terrible because you're pushing ahead too fast, especially with your sprinting background.

So patience, build the blocks and you'll find you'll find your own natural rhythm and you'll start to enjoy it a lot more.

    Good luck.
