NCT is due the 25th of this month so got the car serviced and 2 new tyres on the weekend..€340! The mechanic said my brake discs and pads need replacing (€195) which i just cant afford this month aswell as the service cost.

Is this something the nct will check for as no point putting it through if its a definite fail? Cheers

Yes, the NCT will be failed for defective brakes.

I dont mean to be rude but how can you not figure this out?
Its a test to check if your car is road worthy -it will definitely include checking the brakes are not defective or worn

Ring a few garages and ask if they'll do a payment plan

Yes NCT WILL check brakes. Did the mechanic say need replacing NOW or SOON?

Does the brakes squeal when you brake? If not you might get away for a few more weeks. If the mechanic said they'd need replacing soon rather than need replacing now I'd put it through the test and give yourselve time to save for new brakes.

I dont mean to be rude either but I dont think you fully understand how the NCT works and what is a fail or a pass. You could still have some brake pad left and your mechanic is giving you warning that they need to be done soon. It also depends on the reason that you need discs. It could be that there is a big lip formed on the disc, in which case it would probably still pass an NCT, although you will need to get them done soon anyway. You could also need discs if they were warped etc and you would get a vibration during braking through the pedal which could fail the brake test on ovality if it is quite bad. Without knowing more its hard to say how urgently you need them done.

I thought like with some of the nct items theres a limit to which they'd pass or fail you on something e.g emissions or tyre thread depth.Theres a limit beyond which they wont pass the car. The brake discs do work fine but theyre obviously at the stage where they need replacing according to the mechanic, i just thought maybe there was a safety limit with these aswell. I dont think this is an unreasonable question to ask....im gonna ask it if i dont know the answer sorry.

I thought the test only tested the performance of the brakes, and that to see how worn the pads are, the wheel needs to be taken off. I've never seen the NCT tester take my wheels off.

OP, not knowing anything about your car, difficult to advise, but do you know when your discs/pads were changed before? Pads will need to be replaced more frequently (2 or 3 times) than discs; might be advisable to get a second opinion.

To check brake pads the wheel does not need to be taken off also 90% of brake discs have a wear indicator on them if this is showing its an NCT fail.

I thought the wear indicator was a metal appendage to the pad which makes a squeeling noise against the disc when the pad is sufficiently worn down (not a visual indicator).

Maybe I'm behind the times in terms of car technology. :o

Thats just the pad wear indicator and that type of system is rarely used anymore and has been replaced with electronic pad wear indicators, the disc wear indicator only indicates disc wear.
