I live beside a golf course and get to do all my runs early in the mornings before the course opens.
I have about 400 acres and lots of different routes to choose from.

I am currently training for a marathon and my question is, are there any disadvantages to not running on roads.

i say you are one of the lucky few. Its rare that you can get the opportunity to do all your runs on grass but i try to advocate most of your running should be done on this to avoid injury so i say keep it up. Try one of your long runs on roads just to make sure that your legs dont have a bad reaction. if they do say alternate each long run you do between the two terrains

Running on grass is ideal. It helps prevent injury and in my opinion strengthens the legs compare running on roars as the terrain isn't always as even.

As ecoli suggests you do need to do some road running though. I know a couple of guys who did all their running on grass but when it came to 26 miles on the road they got caught out with very bad cramps etc. I'd suggest doing the first half of your weekly long run on grass and doing the second half on the road. An occasional road run (maybe 1 a week) would also help. Also try and do at least 1 or 2 16+ miles on the road if possible. That's just my experience anyway.

    Mickeybags,

Living beside a gold course is indeed a great luxury but if you are training for a marathon you need to do some of your running on the road (golf paths) to adapt to the pounding your legs will take over 26 miles on the road.

In my opinion it would be a mistake to use all grass and then try to race on the road, it will have an affect on your race. Try 60-70% on grass and 30-40% on road and make sure you have a few long runs done all on road at some stage. Preparing your legs for the pounding they will take in the marathon is a primary objective when planning for one.

    Tergat

Mickeybags - did you have to get permission to use the golf course? I live beside druids glen and druids heath golf courses and have always dreamt of sneaking on but have never had the balls to do it!

Worked there a few years ago so I know the green keepers.

Once you dont interfere with the golfers there is no problem.

Catriona McKiernan used to run a lot on a golf course in Cavan

Get up early and go for it
