    hi

a freind of mine asked me if it was possible to take the horns/synths out of this demo track even when its a stereo file?

they play a main role as pretty much the lead riff. even if it is possible, how is it done? what kind/type of eq would even be needed?

    any help apreciated -- nick

Depends on how it was recorded. Ask how what was used to record the music (8 track, 16 track etc).. the idea is each seperate instrument is recorded on a seperate track, to make what you wanna do a bit easier... :)

think you mean a stereo file ...

there is a way by taking away the mono part of the sound using noise cancellation but its a very long shot

not that difficult..i'm also uncertain whether it would work on this piece though..i'll give it a quick shot, be back to you soon.

think of it a bit like a painting...when you're actually doing the painting, it might be easy enough to remove a bit of red or whatever, but when the thing is finished, there's gonna be layers of different colours and stuff over the bit ya wanna remove, i.e. quite difficult or nigh on impossible. If ya still have the tracks thought, it'd be trivial.

i subtracted the right channel from the left, and reduced the 'noise' a little

    here's the result..not too good..

You can do it with Cedar denoising software, the graphical one. This is how they've made the Beatles Rockband game at Abbey Road. You could probably also do it with Izotope's graphical interface. Time consuming, and expensive.

here's the same file, same process, but put through waves xnoise..

a little better but still unusable..

    waves xnoise..
I didn't listen to that, but I know that Waves X Noise is vastly inferior to almost every other denoiser. It's well old like! Izotope's is superb. Heavy on the processors though.

isotope RX can remove anything out of a mix if it's in the open (works best with light jazz)

    Check it out at http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/rx/

It works really well - but not on really busy music.
