A question for the HR crew....

    Hi,

I'm thinking of leaving my job and am planning on going travelling for a while. You might think I'm crazy leaving a job at a time like this, but truth be told, I've been dying to travel, I want to go back to college and I absolutely hate my job.

The only thing is, if I leave now, it more or less wont be on good terms...I know this as it hasn't gone down too well with other people leaving...one was particularly bad where the fall out was so bad that the person rang in sick for the entire notice period.

It's a big organization and I'm just wondering if I look to go back to work in a year or so when I come back, what actually happens when they look to hire you.

Do all HR people check references? And do they speak to the other companies HR department? And if so, if an employee left on a bad note, would this ever be said "off the record" and also, do they recommend / completely slate someone over the phone if they want? "He wasn't a great worker" or "was late all the time" or whatever (not that these are true of course :D I'm just wondering how much detail they do / can go into it).

    Thanks for any help.

If it's a large organisation, I would be very surprised if they would say anything negative about you. They have nothing to gain, and everything to lose, by potentially defaming you.

I've come across honest 'off the record' references but only where the two parties know and trust each other. Depending on what sector you work in you could suddenly find that everyone knows everyone at a management level. I'd generally expect references to be checked, but I'd also expect many large companies to only give the basic "X worked here between Y and Z". I also wouldn't be particularly surprised if someone's reference from a large company was really a former work-mate doing a favour. If a real reference is given then I'd expect a fairly neutral reference where nothing bad is deliberately said or if the right questions were asked some honest answers that mightn't do you a favour.

I don't work in HR so you'll have to decide if you trust my advice more or less because of it. ;)
