How long would I be waiting to see a dentist?

I woke up at 4am this morning with a terrible throbbing pulsing pain in my tooth and gum. The left side of my mouth has swelled out. One of my teeth has about a third of it missing since a few months back but has never given me any trouble until this morning. My gum is very very sore to touch at the base of the tooth. It actually feels like a tooth is trying to get out of my gum and there is a really bad pressure/pulsing feeling in my gum.

I have been taking paracetamol and anbesol but it isnt really helping. I am dreading tonight as I reckon I wont be able to sleep and am going to be in agony.

Anyway the reason I posted is just to find out if a dentist would see me tomorrow if I rang first thing and explained what has happened? I havnt been to a dentist in 8 years and even then it was the dental hospital. I am now living in Cavan so I havnt a clue what dentist to ring. I would really appreciate any help.

My mother said I should go to A and E and see if I could get some pain killers just to tide me over until I can get an appointment to see a dentist but I would feel a bit weird going to A and E for toothache or am I being silly?

    Thanks a million.

Ouch that sounds like an emergency and in my experience(I am not a dentist) should get you seen tomorrow. I'd suggest posting this in the Cavan forum to get dentist recommendations. If you don't get one then check the Golden Pages and go through the numbers till you get one who will see you.

If it's an emergency you would have a better chance of being seen tmr. That said, I have an abscess on my tooth and had to wait 3 days to get an appointment! Extra strong panadol is a lifesaver!

Thanks everybody for the replies. I went down to the local dentists first thing yesterday morning (after another night without much sleep). My mouth had swollen out some more and I looked like one of the characters out of Bo Selecta. Got seen after about an hour and the dentist prescribed me Flagyl and Pennecilin. I am booked in to get my tooth out on Thursday.

Thank god the pain has stopped and the swelling has gone down a bit. Im not looking forward to getting my tooth out but I know it has to be done. Im just so grateful that the pain the stopped. It was agony. I have toothache in the past but this was just unreal.

Now that the pain has eased off a bit, would you not be interested in saving this tooth, Gazzer?
