Just got a set of 17" Alloys off a mate and intend to put them on my Passat, they were on his Golf so Im pretty sure they will fit ok.

At the moment they have 215/45/17 but they are shot and need replacing,

Can anyone suggest a reasonable quality tyre? not something that will set me back €150 per tyre!

Also, by replacing the original 195/65/15, will the handling be effected? positively / negatively?

    any thoughts welcome.

    have a look here - http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m4b0s0p0

you wont notice any negetive effects by going to 17" wheels imo other than the obvious higher cost of tyres.

What year/Mark Golf did they come off and what year/mark Passat are they gonna be put onto?

The Mk4 golf(98 to 04) has a stud pattern of 5 x 100mm, like the Mk5 passat from 96 to 05. However the Mk5 golf onwards(04 to present) has a stud pattern of 5 x 112mm, like the new Mk6 passat(05 to present). The models must be like with like for the wheels to fit

I've had a look here and at eiretyres too, there is such a huge range of varying prices, I intend to stear clear ( excuse the pun ) of the sub €50 tyres on the basis that at this price they must be inferior in the road holding or longevity stakes.

Anyone with any thoughts or experience with Nankang NS2's?

Any problems getting them fitted? will most tyre places fit em for a price or do they tend to send you packing if you haven't bought the tyres from them?

anyone know of a friendly fitter in the finglas/ballymun/santry or navan/kells directions?

Ive been running Nankangs for a while. I find them good. They are pretty soft so offer good grip. Not the most long lasting but then alot of the expensive tyres will last even less mileage.
There are lot of jokes about Nankangs calling them ditchfinders etc but it must be that the NS2 are a major step forward cause nothing at all wrong with them.
Ive been using 225/45/18 on a TT and now have them on the front of Audi A5 and they are good. Any difference between them and the original fitment Michelin pilot sport would be minimal and would require back to back test to make the difference stand out for most drivers
To be honest, you will find by moving from 15" to 17", there will be alot less movement and role in the tyre so regardless of make of tyre, the 17" should be much more stable / surefooted on turn in to a corner.
