An Bord Snip Nua Report

    Evening Echo Website

Up to 20,000 job cuts in the public sector are to be recommended to the Government in the report from the so-called An Bord Snip Nua, it has been reported.

The cuts would be introduced over the next five years and would amount to more than €5bn of savings to the Government's annual spending.

The report is due to be put before the Cabinet this week.

Media reports today suggest that most of the recommended cutbacks will be in the areas of health services and education, including third level institutions.

Areas under the control of the Department of Justice, such as the Garda Siochána, will also be targeted.

A drop in social welfare payments of between 3% and 5% may be put forward, as well as a rationalisation of many state agencies, including FÁS and Enterprise Ireland.

It is also believed the Office of the Children's Ombudsman may face a merger with another state body, or be axed altogether.

Senior Ministers have already stressed that all decisions on cutbacks will ultimately lie with the Government, but with many departments under renewed pressure to come up with savings, the report's recommendations will mean more difficult decisions are on the way.

apart from not replacing retired members, will the newer members on the new 5 year contract be targeted??

Getting rid of Gardai is stupid. That is all.

once again i reiterate - cutbacks in the public service should NEVER impact frontline services.

Savings are actually easily achieved in the overtime bill - BY HIRING MORE STAFF. 2 gardai doing the same job as one who is doing double overtime is cheaper than 1.

Same as in medicine - oh where, oh where is the wood for all the trees?

It didnt seem too long ago the Government promised everyone that frontline emergency services will not be affected. Oh how things change, heh.

You have GOT to be joking me.

This is one of the worst pieces of utter and complete bull***t to ever come from the offices of government in this country.
They have new anti-crime legislation being introduced at present, and are constantly yabbing on about how we should have a lower crime rate in this country, but last time I checked you actually need Gardaí to enforce these laws . What good is a Gard sitting behind a desk in an office doing? Sweet féck all.

As for the health service, what a joke. They are really taking the piss with this one. This is what you get for voting in FF.

I've had enough of this government , I really have.

Except that when you factor in pension costs, it works out cheaper to let people have loads of overtime, rather than hiring in new people.

also when someone is doing overtime government are keeping more than half of this money with pension levy and tax etc
