I was told to be thinking of a Leaving Cert History Special Topic at Higher Level which would be easy to research and interesting.

I have a good interest in the following topics:

    • Irish History (Socialism/Republicanism especially)
    • Soviet Russia and the Revolution
    • American Foreign Policy and the Vietnam War
    • The Spanish Civil War

Irish volunteers on both sides of the Spanish Civil War? ... i.e. la bandera Irlandesa let by Eoin O'Duffy on the Nationalist side and the Connolly Column led by Frank Ryan and Peadar O'Donnell on the Republican side.

In fact, you might be able to gather enough just on the Republican side, but it's narrowing your focus a lot.

This site might be useful for avenues to explore, though like all such websites should be treated with extreme caution ... it is not an academic history site. Publications link is useful though, and if you proceed with caution it might give you many other hints etc.

    Oh and btw ...
Fearghal McGarry (1999) Irish politics and the Spanish Civil War
    and
    R. A. Stradling (1999) The Irish and the Spanish Civil War, 1936-39
though those links are the result of a search and may not survive, just google them.

If you like military stuff then go for this, i guarantee no one in the country will do one of this topic unless they have a big understanding of the Vietnam war.
