I'm not sure if this should be in the Setanta thread.

Am I right in assuming for the remainder of the GAA season there will be no more GAA games on Sky for UK viewers. I did some checking on the possibility of PPV but this put an end to that....

    http://www.independent.ie/business/media/gaa-plays-the-tv-rights-game-1245453.html

It was Dec 2007 but this caught my eye...And he cleared up the fact that Setanta's GAA proposals do not contain any pay-per-view options, as all games will be broadcast on the basic Setanta Ireland channel.

I am aware Setanta cannot show live games to Irish subs.

    Anyone with anymore info?

Did someone somewhere say the games would be availlable online?

I think the Ulster final should at least be available on BBC2 NI on Sky 992 will it not?

I forgot about that. I will set up BBC2 NI now in 'Other Channels'. Thank you for the reminder.

I don't know? RTE will have the Sunday Game online to Ireland only. Setanta had live games online in the past on PPV but I can't find anything on thier website to suggest it is still available. The site looks a little out of date.

I just read through the information relating to how to use this site.It seems more "official" than the typical ones I have tried in the past. Do any IT savvy guys have any opinions whether by downloading the software recommended such as sopcast,TVU etc that your computer becomes more susceptible to viruses. With the anticipated prices to watch ESPN/SKY maybe more of us than ever might have to resort to these streams?!?

Can we keep it legal here please? Only links to legitimate streams and no instructions on how to bypass IP address restrictions, please.

The article refers to matches shown in the domestic market i.e. Ireland. At the time there was a debate on whether the games would be FTA or become PPV.

I'm not sure what Setanta's plans are for showing GAA in the UK but in the past they had the PPV channel (before they launched the full time channels that are now gone) so I assume that they will revert back to this.

The GAA are currently holding talks with a pub chain in the Britain to broadcast live GAA games following the collapse of Setanta Sports.

Supporters of the GAA in England, Scotland and Wales have been left without live matches since the UK Setanta operation went into administration three weeks ago.

But the Association remains hopeful of getting games back on screens in Britain, having met with an unnamed licensee last week where plans to air live games again was discussed.

'We have been in talks with a pub chain in Britain. But we are not any further down the line than that and we're not in a position to comment on the issue any further right now,' Croke Park's Commercial and Marketing Manager Dermot Power said.

Why don't they just give them to Sky, Five, or any other channel with conditional access for the UK for the rest of the season.
This would serve the Irish community and maybe help spread the Gaelic Games gospel. (This is actually something Setanta did badly, putting GAA action on Setanta Sports 2 and giving it minimal publicity.)

I know they would loose out on some £££££ but might set them up for better deals in the years to come. It's a once off unusual situation.

Of course, these simulcasts would have to be blocked from Irish tv sets, due to contract agreements with RTE.

You are assuming that these channels would want them even if they were free.

True..... But I'm sure Sky could squeeze some games onto SSXtra in place of "Premier League Years" which is on all Sunday afternoon!!!
Might even get them some more subscribers for little if any overhead.

That's true. Sunday afternoons are pretty much repeats during the summer months. There are Saturday evening games most weeks too so you are looking at maybe 8 hours a weekend. That's a lot of time to give.

They wouldn't have to show every game....
Besides, we're in dreamland. There is not way the GAA will give away the rights and a chance to make a few Pounds. And there is no way Sky or any UK channel will pay anything for half-a-season at the last minute.

I'm just frustrated at the way Gaelic Games are marketed in the UK. There is enough of an Irish market in the UK to deserve better Gaelic Games promotion/coverage.

This whole thing does beg the questions - Where is RTE International???

Why can't the games be provided on a Pay Per View basis to any region not covered by a current broadcasting agreement?

Sky has plenty of slots available on its under-used PPV-sports channels. I think this should be not be difficult to arrange. It should even be possible to offer a premium HD version because RTE actually films the games in digital HD now.

An alternative option for the GAA would be to setup their own PPV online streaming service (GAAtv ?), restricted to ip addresses outside regions with existing broadcasting agreements. I would happily pay 10 to 15 pounds to watch a live match and I'm sure many other fans would too. Pubs could pay a higher fee in order to get the pint glass logo on the screen. Plenty of good pubs already have the ability to display live streaming and for those that currently don't, it's not that difficult or expensive to setup. I've come across quite a few pubs (in remote parts of Africa of all places) that already use this method (possibly illegaly) to show live English soccer matches.

The history of downloaded music shows that people will pay for something they want when they are offered a reliable, legal option. It looks to me like there is a potential revenue stream out there that the GAA is not bothered with.

I would suspect that Setanta will probably get back into the PPV GAA market in the UK particularly in the pub business. That's where they started so I'd imagine they would be well placed to do it again.

do rte really block people from outside ireland from viewing games it streams from rte.ie when theres no other option to view them? whats the point in that?

RTÉ (and TV3) only possess IoI (Island of Ireland, 32 counties) rights from the GAA.

They have no choice but to block it, otherwise Setanta and co. who have other international rights wouldn't be happy.

They are not allowed to stream it outside of Ireland. Sky channel 167 showed live GAA coverage again yesterday so it's not like it is unavailable.

They do, but I discovered that you can get around that by using a three datacard - it seems to presume you are in Ireland. The stream was jumpy last time I used it, but worked
