Social Welfare Claim - "home visit" ... how come?

I've applied for social welfare, as I was previously self-employed, and the business has totally dried up. All the paperwork was submitted last week, and in the meantime they sent me to community welfare. Anyway, when I asked SW how long the application process might take, they simply couldn't tell me... not even a guesstimate. They did say though that the next step would be a home visit - is that common? Why would they want to send someone out to do that, rather than do it at the office? It's all new to me, I've never claimed before. Oh - I'm renting an apartment with my wife, and I ran my business here. Can they insist we now move out to a cheaper apartment?

they are sending out an inspector because you were self employed .you can live where you want it makes no difference to them.

How do you mean, because I was self-employed? Specifically how does that relate? When I went to Community Welfare, she seemed annoyed that I was paying too much rent, even though I wasn't looking for rent allowance or anything.

if you had been working for an employer it would be more straight forward, self employed they will look at accounts and this is done by an inspector.none of her business if you are paying too much rent or how much you are paying for that matter.

I see..... I won't have my accounts all done yet, is that going to matter? It won't be til much nearer October 31st when I get a book-keeper to do it for me... I've bank statements though, receipts for purchases, etc.

They will probably inspect your accounts from last year as well.
As your business premises was also your home, they may want a home visit to see the status of the business currently, if there is any evidence of work etc.
    Its standard.
