Maxtor 500gb Hard Drive @ Easons

Easons have a Maxtor 500gig external hard drive for about 70quid I think it was (I was only grabbing a paper in passing so I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to it). I want an external hard drive to store videos, DVDs, music and pictures. I reckon 500GB might be surplus to my needs but the price seems alright and it is a lot of space anyway.

Is this a wise buy or will the thing break a week after I load my stuff onto it and then I'll lose all my stuff ?

I've only a laptop and I've loads of stuff on it I want to store elsewhere.

I had a 320 gb maxtor, bought it in maplin for 120 i think. It broke after 8 months. Wont power up, even with a different adaptor. I havent had a chance to send it away to get it checked out. I wouldnt buy one again. I only buy popular brands now like hp etc. It might be worth your while buying 2 at that price though...to have 2 back ups,
