External hard drive- how to backup new data only from laptop?

HI,
I have important stuff from my laptop backuped on external hard drive.
How can I periodically backup new material only from my laptop?
Are there free softwares for this?
I'm looking for the easiest way to do it.

Did quite a bit of research into this, found a free program called GFI Backup, I just downloaded & installed it today. Happy with it so far. It's got some great reviews.

Suitable for Windows XP or Vista.

Microsoft synctoy,
pick the folders on either side,
i chose echo(the data you want on one side to go to the external)
press sync and you away.

Not the fastest in the world but tis free!!

Found SyncToy would say success even though it skipped files. Not to be depended upon IMO. Robocopy is also free, rock solid but it is generally a command line utility.

Are we going the route of backing up the whole drive?

DriveImage XML I highly recommend, no trials just free for personal use.
