If you pass a subject by compensation in first year arts, does that mean that you can't pick it for second year?

I was in that situation in 1st year. you have the option of proceeding to 2nd year and not picking the subject that you passed by compensation, but if u wish to do that subject in 2nd year you have to sit the repeat exam. That's how it was when I passed IT in arts by compensation back in 2006 anyways.
