There's a whole heap of 80's games, you'll have a hard time. Give us a description and we might be able to help.

it was called Galaxy ............. somethin or other,
it had four levels, one a bit like space invaders, middle two I cant really remember too well, last level you had to shoot the mothership kind of thing but there was a little enemy guy underneath you trying to stab you with a spear, then it would loop through the four levels again and get progressivly harder

Okay that sounds pretty obscure since there were loads of space invaders clones. Sounds like it could have been an Atari 2600 game? Maybe try http://www.vgmuseum.com/

You might find a hard time finding it. If you know the system it might narrow it down a lot.

I used to play it in an arcade, 10p for two games, think maker might have been Taiwo ???? or something like that

Another thing to do is use Googles image search tab, just type in the search terms and let it do the work, partial name, games format, etc, anything at all to help narrow the search.

Was it Galaxian? or one of its variants. Used to love that game back in the day...

Or Phoenix (sic) I think that had a mother ship in it

None of the games so far mentioned are the game in question. I remember playing this too, basically, let a ship go by, like in Galaxian.. and the fecker is like one of the stick men in Amidar, below the player, with a spear, furiously stabbing away.

Just to say, you'd have seen this game feature on the Oric home computer, the game Xenon 1 by IJK software had it.

So was your ship rooted to the bottom of the screen, I presume it must be if the spear man can get you. I hope you find out what it is so I can stop trying to guess what it is, my only guesses were Galaga or Yars Revenge (but don't think it was arcade, just 2600). Oh well I will keep thinking.

There are sites where the OP could look.

    (in no particular order)

    http://www.arcade-history.com/

    http://www.klov.com/

    http://www.ggdb.com/

    http://www.games-db.com/Arcade/

    http://pcbdb.net/

There are a lot of very similar sites.. and more than those listed above, which I use, that I've forgotten.

Narrow it down by year, manufacturer, game type etc..

Can you be more precise with the year? Do the names Taito or Tecmo ring any bells? Even where you played it might help.

My first thought was Gorf (4 screens, space invaders, galaxians, laser wars, and mothership IIRC), but I don't recall a guy stabbing up. There is another game with a guy stabbing up (might be a Sega game) - maybe you're mixing up a couple of games. Unless it was a hacked Gorf.

Will see if I can dig up the game with a dude stabbing up.

EDIT: My memory was a little hazy, Gorf has 5 screens, but stood for "Galactic Orbiting Robot Force". More info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorf

I found these which when played is like a "newer" version of the game, the one I played had first and third screens the same as this, but last screen is defo different, not sure about second screen, colour is putting me off a bit
