Problem with external monitor

I've recently started using an external monitor with my laptop (IBM Thinkpad T60p).
I've set it up as clone desktop, as I only want to use the monitor and not the laptop display.
I want to be able to close the laptop lid when I do this, so I clicked "Do Nothing when I close lid" in the Power Management section in Control Panel.
However, about 30 seconds after I close the lid, the monitor display goes blank. When I reopen the laptop lid, it takes about 30 seconds for the monitor to come back on as well.

This is quite annoying. Is there any way I can use my monitor with my laptop lid shut?
