legal fees divorce - payment on account

Is it normal for solicitors in a divorce case to seek payment on account. I paid mine €7k at the start of the process. Very little has happened apart from letters back and forth arguing over level of maintenance. He has now asked for a further 3500. I haven't received any details from him (have now requested this twice) as to costs incurred thus far, hours worked etc. Also, I now realise that he gave me completely the wrong advice so wondered if anyone had experience of getting monies back in such a case? Thank you.
