Is there any offence committed if you fail to update your address on your driving licence?

I dont think so but thats why I always ask if the address on the licence is their current address. If the driver says yes then they are committing an offence

I was asked this when pulled over for speeding (Has youse nothing better to be doing :p)

I said no I have not lived there in 9 years. He said get that changed, I said Ok Gard I will.

It was a f**king riveting story so it was ,anyone want to hear it again?

I wondered something similar since my licence has always had me down as being 20 yrs older than I am :o

I've tried having it corrected to no avail, so if you guys stop a sprightly 63yr old who only looks 43 'tis me!.

From my reading of it i assume it means that if they say it is their current address when it is in fact not their current address they are thereby committing an offence by giving a false address??

MIssing some crucial words in my post. This is what I meant to post:

I dont think so but thats why I always ask if the address on the licence is their current address. If the driver says yes its their current address but they have a new address then they are committing an offence

Yes that is how you are supposed to do it. Many people move and don't bother getting theirs amended.

You can get it done for free, also if you're a woman and you get married you can get your name changed for free.

Or if you are a man and get married you can get your name changed for free.

I have my folks address on mine, don't see them moving anytime soon so I'll leave it be.

Can you just do it here:confused:

No. It does not update the paper licence which must be sent to a MTO for re-issue.

Ah, but sure you don't need to have it changed on paper. The points from gardai or whatever would still be sent to your registered address, wouldn't they:confused:

No and that is the whole point of what I was saying. When a Garda stops you and you present your licence you are asked is this your correct address. The Garda will write down your address as on the licence unless you advise him otherwise.

And Gardaí do not issue points, the RSA does after the legal processes have been completed.

but what if the garda doesn't stop you but catches you on those cameras instead. Is it just sent to where the car is registered:confused: I'll send a letter into the mto anyway, just curious.

Yes. Sure, how does the camera know who was driving?

Ok thanks, just wondered. So does that mean a fine is only paid and they can't give points as they aren't able to establish who is driving. probably should start a new thread about all this :p

Edit, never mind. found the answer below
