    hi all,
just a quick quandry. i got a iomega prestige 1tb external hard drive but can't leave it connected during start up as it stalls the start up. it stalls it at a point where it's running through all devices. is there any way of fixing this or am i doomed to have to keep plugging & unplugging the external hard drive? thanks for any help

Possibly check the boot order of the pc and make sure usb devices are after hard drives?

i only have a basic knowledge with pc's but i'm fairly sure that it goes through the internal then external hard drives

Are you saying you just assume or you've checked and presume from what you see that that is true?

Usb devices could well be ahead of internal hard drives. I myself have it that way in case i want to boot off my usb stick.

I work in IT- I have a 1TB external Western Digital drive at home which also stops the PC from booting up if it's connected during BIOS boot. It doesn't matter if I only have the internal hard-drive set in the boot order, the PC will still stall, trying to boot off the external drive.

My motherboard is about five years old though, Intel D865PERL, so that's the problem. the newer boards wouldn't try and boot off it. So I reckon you'll just had to keep plugging the external in and out too. :(
