Do you need planning permission to build stables? Generally yes.

Is there a grant you can get? Possibly, but i don't know how you get them.

An important issue may be how many you are planning.

Stables are classed as agricultural buildings. You local Council will tell you what rules they have re the size of agri developments. Generally it goes by square metres - under a certain size doesn't need pp, and over that size does. They take any yard area into that size, not just the buildings.

If your site is within so many metres of a dwelling house, you need permission regardless of size. You also need to be a certain distance back from public roads.

Best to check with your Council.

There was an alternative farm enterprises grant under the last Rural Development Programme for equine facilities. It was means tested and took your on- and off-farm income into account, and also you had to have so many 'units' of horses. Have a good look at the spec they require for the buildings -you may find that building the stables your own way (esp if you can get some elements done for cash) might work out cheaper than building it their way - even with a grant. Look it up on www.agriculture.ie
