Help me find a powerful wireless adapter for my desktop

By powerful I mean, has a big arial and can pick up a good signal from a bad spot.

I'm currently using a Netgear WG111v2 wireless USB adapter, but for some reason, I cannot get a good signal out of it. I have my 802.11g router in my room 20ft away from the desktop in the spare room, but while the signal is good, the strength rarely gets above 11mpbs! In fact, I can't download at more than 3mbps from anywhere, on a 20MB connection!

I can't understand why this is, as my laptop in the same room has no trouble getting the full strength. I've even disabled the onboard and used the WG111v2 with the laptop, and I'm still getting better results.

Wiring the computer up with ethernet is not possible so can someone please recommend a wireless adapter - USB or PCI, with maybe a retractable arial, to help me get what I should be getting?!
