Has anyone ever heard of this film, it was on a list of the "top 250 films to see before you die" I was just wondering if it is worth a look.

    Hell yes... I love it!

Wonderfully written, amazing soundtrack and great performances from all involved.

    Can't recommend it enough!

Yes, I saw it when it came out, really liked it, there's a sequel out now called S Darko which I haven't seen yet. Donnie Darko is known to be a cult classic and is quite an interesting movie with a nice soundtrack. Prepare to be confused!

No no no.. don't buy the Director's Cut.

I have it (plus the original on R1)..the DC is far inferior to be honest plus they replace some of the best music!

    Buy this version: http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/3432713/Donnie-Darko/Product.html

Was going to suggest the original one but didn't spot one that was in stock...
I never got around to watching the director's cut in its entirety due to turning it off halfway through thanks to the commentary.
I reckon the reason Richard Kelly had nothing to do with the sequel was because he became too firmly wedged up his own arse to function as a normal human being.....

Has anyone heard of it.. lol. Who hasn't?

I always find it funny when people call it a cult film because I don't think I've ever met a soul who hasn't seen it and proclaims it as one of their favourite films to prove they're smart 'cuz they "got it".

Good film, though. Found it a tad overrated because of all the hype around it, but still definitely a must see.

Yes I have to admit that I am a fan too. Agreed the Directors cut isn't as good as the original theatratical version. But I do have both and I can't say that about any more of my movies.

It's a good movie, over rated by a lot of people.
    Soundtrack is the best part.

Great movie, real cult classic. I recommend anyone teenager to watch it. It is THE cult movie.

Yeah, it's a good film, especially if you're a teenager. It taps into that age quite well.

The Director's Cut was terrible though. Really, really ruined the film for me.

I thought S.Darko was ok. It certainly wasn't as bad as most people are reporting or wasn't down there in, let's say, "American Psycho 2" territory for example.

Similarily imho half the reason Donnie Darko is so praised is purely down to the performance of Jake Gyllenhaal who basically makes the material seem better than it really is.

The film would have been a lot better if Patrick Swayze had more screen time :pac:

The last time I watched Donnie Darko (maybe 3rd or 4th time), tears came to my eyes as it was finishing. I had no idea why at first, caught me by surprise.

But I think it was genuinely just something special about the quality of the film as a whole that defies analysis and is more than the sum of its parts.

It's that good. For me, anyway. Recommend highly.

PS - I am a 40 y.o. male who is not overly prone to crying at films.

(Other films that have moved me, though, include One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Love Liza, Dancer in the Dark.)

Haven't seen the Director's Cut or the sequel. Something tells me I probably won't either.

An "OK" movie but I don't get all the hype.
Excellent cast, direction, soundtrack and writing but it is marred by richard kellys assumption that we know what is going on in his head.

The film makes no sense unless you read his "history of timetravel" companion.
Its a bit too pretentious for me.

I love it to bits but I do fell that a lot of the hype hurts the film. First time I saw it was the week it was released on R1 DVD. I had read about the giant bunny and time travel and was instantly intrigued enough to preorder the DVD. I read nothign about the film before watching it and I was blown away. My brothers started to watch it with me but they all left well before the end.

When I went back to school after summer I told everyone I could about it and everyone of them accused me of making it up and how retarded it sounded. Surprise, surprise, a year or two later when it's a massive film everyone was talking about how great it was.

I saw it when it first came out and thought it was absolute sh1te.

I shall have to give it another viewing.

Same as me.. bought the R1 off CDWOW (back when they had reliable delivery times) and still have that copy.

I think people who saw it before the hype really appreciate it more.

Yeah OP needs to learn to use search button

Great movie bought the Region A Blu-Ray recently which has both versions of the movie, but as I've mentioned on some of the other threads, I'd advise anyone who hasn't watched it to stick with the Theatrical Release, it's the one time I've been happpy that the studio stepped in and stopped the directors vision!

I know what you mean. I really didn't enjoy it very much.
