I wont claim to know anything about it, but vetting is to ensure that you are suitable to work with vunerable people. I guess if your offences dont show anything of an unsuitability to deal with these people you could be okay. Thats just a guess tho.

    User1,

You'll need to self declare any convictions when you get your registration kit! I myself got accepted to TCD for childrens & general and I have a DUI against me! :( Much earlier in the year I contacted TCD about it and (at the time) when I was considering just general I set up a meeting with the director of nursing in St. James, who assured me that to err once is forgivable as long as you've nothing else against you and your conviction is nothing too serious, you should be ok!

That said it's up to the individual hospitals to determine policy. It's nothing got to do with the HEI's - like I was told the colleges would accept mass murders, they don't care, it's the hospital you are doing your placement in that determines your suitability! So I would also suggest that you contact the hospital you'll be doing your placements in and set up a meeting with them!

I myself have to contact Tallaght (where childrens & general placements take place) to set up a meeting with them to ensure they'll accept me into their hospital on work placement!

    Hope that helps
    S

If its a juvenile record then don't worry, they're sealed/destroyed/whatever

Yes I contacted the hospital to ensure that there would not be a problem for me when it came to doing my placements, I was assured there was not! I think the hospitals are more concerned with violent/sex related crimes than smaller offences. However again I stress that each hospital would set it's own criteria, but I personally would tell you to relax, be honest on your forms, and if a problem arises you can ask to speak with the director of nursing in the Meath to appeal your case! A DUI 11 years ago should not present a problem, as long as it's a one off and you're not seen as a habitual offender!

Garda vetting is carried out by the Garda Central Vetting Unit in Thurles and the college will provide all forms you're required to fill in. Info can be found at http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/employment/employment-rights-and-conditions/monitoring-and-surveillance-at-work/garda_clearance_for_employees

    Hope that helps,
