Just noticed Google now have templates for Google docs, some very good ones there too. But the really good news is I've discovered they can be downloaded in ODF format straight to OpenOffice. It means you can work with these templates both on and off line.

To do this just save the template to your Google Docs, tick the template in the document list. Then click the "More Actions" button, "Save as Open Document" will be on the drop down menu.
