Recorder picking up static/noise?

Can anyone tell me why the built in recorder in my laptop has been picking up white sound the last while? Ive tried recording from msn recorder to using audacity and it still has that white noise sound in the background(as if im on a tv station with no reception). It used to work perfectly?
