Around Xmas time the sterling and euro were just about £1=€1 and now a Euro gets you about £.85p so I suppose the sterling will keep getting stronger . So will it still be as cheap to shop i NI by the end of the year as it is now ?

If people knew that then they would make a fortune.

for the record eur/gbp has gained in the last week.

A year ago €50 would get you between £27-£30 though usually closer to 27, while now it gets you between £38-£42 depending on the days rates. I am just gonna enjoy it before it invariably goes back to bein shíte :)

I can see it goin back down to about 80cent to a £ before too long, and by that stage, there wont be hardly any benefit of shopping up north! Wonder how long this forum will last....

Even at 0.8p, groceries/wines in Asda & Sainsbury's will still be cheaper then the "reduced prices" in Tesco/Dunnes etc down here

They'll still be cheaper but the margin will be getting tighter when you factor in your petrol if you're driving from somewhere like Dublin.

Don't remember the euro ever being that low against the £ must have been when it was really weak against the dollar :p

Rubbish. When EURGBP was settled for years in it's range of 60 to 70 it was still cheaper to shop up north with big savings possible.

Not necessarily, depends on what you're buying really. You have to factor in fuel, tolls and of course the time which could be spent turning a profit elsewhere.

Nah I wouldnt' say "BIG" savings. Savings to be had (especially on booze) but if you're driving from somewhere like Dublin you'd wanna be making sure it's worth your while.

Was just on www.xe.com and €1 is worth £0.87

I'm heading up there in a week for booze. Was gonna buy a tv but factoring in petrol money etc, I don't think it'll be that much cheaper.

This time last year 50euro bought around £39. Where are you exchanging euros? Looks like you're being robbed.

The Euro was down to 85p but it's gone back up to 88 and now it's hovering around 87 I think. All good news.

See this morning that the euro is at 89 against sterling .... The pound seemed to be gaining a bit for a while as referred to in previous posts anyone know why there is this drop again & whether it's likely to last .... drop further or recover in the nearish future?

Anyone who knew such things would be paid millions a year. Too many variables at play to reliably predict currency movements.

Yeah, I know but just wondered what the general feeling is. Have some sterling that I'm going to need to convert soon and was wondering whether to hold out for a bit of improvement in the rate ... hard to call!!

You could change half now and half in a few months and minimise any loss.

As someone who works in sterlingland and lives in euroland, I can't wait for the currency to turn around again:mad:

€/Sterling spot market is currently 90.64 (xe.com are quoting 90.48). We're also heading for 1.48 against the US$. The Euro seems to be strengthening- and seems to be on a run. It'll have problems breaking the $1.50 barrier, but if it does- it could really go on a decent run. Sterling looks likely to further weaken- given the borrowing figures that were released on Friday. This isn't going to help Irish employment.......

Looks like my speculation was wrong :D
Happy days, heading up to Newry this.

    Now @ 92.3p and counting. Also @ $1.48
I see bargain flights to LAX on the bargain alerts thread- if my wife was mobile...... :D

I imagine that its the inverse- they are offering €1 for 95p- not the opposite.

Great time to be an importer from the UK though. Maybe we will see more parity pricing at Christmas like Tesco did on clothes earlier this year...

Even 3 years ago shopping cost less in the North than here. Although if paying your own petrol you needed to be spending a bit/
However there is a greater selection in most shops in the north than in Dublin anyway.
Simply work out your costs getting there and back the amount you would save and is there a plus or minus. You could also calculate a cost for your time.
Use it also as a day out.
If I can save more than € 20.00 I'm off up north. Christmas savings booze, food, presents etc have been 100 - 150 each year over the last 5.
Please dont mention spending in Ireland as a patriotic duty - when our lords and masters start doing their patriotic bit I might think about accepting paying higher prices. By the way lords and masters I include the trade union leaders. But thats a different subject.
