How can I tell if a company has shut down or not? I have ordered windows from a local company. He gave me a price and I told him to go ahead with it. I got quotes from about 6 other companies. He wanted a deposit, I said I couldn;t be sure if his company could deliver or not, that I wouldn't take the risk, he was the one that should take the risk. He agreed. Now he doesn't ring me, doesn't answer the phone, the phone is off, when I do get him, he says "very busy at the mo, i'll give ya a bell in 10 mins", after a day or two I ring him again, he gives me the same cock and ball story of his supplier doesn't ring him.

There are pleny of people that wanted the work, now I have wasted 2 weeks on this rogue. What can I do exactly? If he didn't want the work he could have said it. I hate assholes like that.

you havent paid anything so I think you should have put this in the ranting and raving section.

In answer to your question - I vaguely remember someone posting on Boards a list of companies that have gone into liquidation.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055503745 might help !!!

Trent Shy Ballpoint, I'd count yourself lucky that you did not engage (or give a deposit) to this company. If they are behaving like that before they have delivered, can you imagine what it would be like trying to get snags fixed. My advice is to delete his number from your records, and talk to one of the other guys who offers local references.

All you have lost is time, not a few years of looking at shoddy work and chasing a cowboy :)

I think you have cause to be concerned. You can register with the Company Registration Office & go to www.core.ie to see the status of any company alternatively, you can check www.sbpost.ie & I think you go to the company report section (this part of the site was down at time of posting).

To the best of my knowledge either of these will only tell you the last set of accounts submitted by the company, therefore if the company was flying when it submitted it's last set of accounts & is struggling at the moment- you will be none the wiser.

The report costs about €3 from www.core.ie, I think it's less from the SB Post.

You might also want to do a search at www.courts.ie (its free).

But like others have said, you've probably dodged a bullet on this one.

Considering the way things are now, I will not be paying anyone anything until I get the job done. I have accounts with companies which are payed monthly. I won't be paying any company anything just in case they go bust, because if I lose 3 or 4 thousand euro because of a shady company, it puts me in a very very bad position. I shouldn't have to pay anything until I see the finished product. It is not a rant or a rave.

I will take a look at the sites, thanks for the info :)

He rang me again and gave me a story about his supplier. I asked him if he had more suppliers and he said yes, but he was using this one for me... (crappy quality?). I said if he doesn't give me an answer by tomorrow about wtf he is at, I will go with someone else. :)

Would have ditched him the day he started messing me around to be honest.

Certainly wouldn't be trying to contact the same lad 2 weeks later - what a total waste of your time. There are other suppliers. Big reputable ones wouldn't do this. Small time charlies would do this though.

If you lon onto www.cro.ie and search the company it will tell you the company status which could be normal or liquidation. This is free. However a company could be in serious trading difficulty but still be trading as normal according to the CRO so its prob not even worth checking. If he was in liqudation he cant trade so he would even have considered selling you the windows.

As everyone else has said get the windows off someone else. There is surely plenty of choice at the moment.
