Just come back from a stunning week in Ibiza and whilst there we went to hippy sun set beaches and there were few people out on their stand up Paddle surfboards. Have to say really added to the atmosphere.

Since being back being looking around and see the sport is taking off somewhat work wide and I fancy having ago.

Does anyone have any info, or do it themselves?

I’m in Wicklow/Dublin BTW so West coast is a no go for now. 

    Cheers Pip

I tried it a few times, but on flat water. It looks like it would be a lot of fun on the small mushy waves we seem to get a lot in this country. Pity the boards are so expensive though. Surfdock in Dublin sell the boards, they can probably advise you where to go too.

Holy Crap, just seen the price of their boards!!! €1200 plus.
I've seen a few on line around the 500 mark. Still steep though.

But I'm liking the idea of being able to use on flat and hit the odd 10cm high 'wave' we get here on the east coast.

I'll find a cheep board some where.

    Cheers ,

    Hey Pip,

SUPping is great fun. Good on flat water, and brilliant in the surf, but you need the right shape to suit what you intend to do with it. Longer and faster on flat water, shorter for waves, and /or fcs fins for waves.
I've tried Pearses demo one here: http://www.bigsurf.ie/showcat.php?catid=58 with and without the fcs fins in, and cause of the length you need the fcs fins for it to turn sharp.

They pick up the smallest of waves too. Way earlier than surfing. You're also standing up ready to surf before you catch a wave, so no jumping up, although you do have to hold onto the paddle.

A SUP and a shortboard is a nice combo. Oh yea, carbon paddles are the way to go - no power lost to the alu paddle. And a nice long leash.

New ones are here from Starboard: http://www.bigsurf.ie/showcat.php?catid=81. Massive range.

    Enjoy.

    Cheers TheP for the info.
I've been in touch with John fromhttp://web.mac.com/johnkenny/SUP_IRELAND/Welcome.html and Hopefully paddling out with him one day next week to give myself a test run...

Will report back on how things go.

If any one in the mean time knows of a cheep board, please pm me.

    Thanks,

    Pip
