Is HG possibly for hyperglide, which would mean it is a shimano cassette, ED might mean ergo drive or some other campag marketing tag.

ED is Campagnolo hub, HG is Shimano

    http://halmspast.info/shimano-8-speed-hg-freehub-body.htm

They refer the free hub body ( and not the entire hub ) see webpage ...

Should be no issue between using the same free hub body between 9 and 10 speed, as the free hub body size has stayed the same and the cassettes and chains have gotten smaller / narrow to get the extra cog in there !!!

thanks chaps. Being the savy internet user that I am, I did, as a matter of course, search Google for ED10/HG10. However, my powers must be waning as I could not find an answer. All the info is much appreciated. One pair of HG10 wheels on the way.

If you buy a silver set then yes, but if you buy a black set, I'll wager that they are black. :D

Raam, I know you're probably set on these wheels (which look lovely) but just in case: Cycleways are doing an online special on Ksyrium Elites. A pair for €450 which beats any UK online price I've seen.

You'd die for a FastForward? You must be a cheap date.

If we're discussing wheel porn, may I add that whilst idly reading a review of Mavic's Cosmic Carbone Ultimates today I came across the following splendid user-contributed comment:
These are great wheels, extremely light and stiff but they somehow feel a bit fragile compared to the Cosmic Carbone SLs I use for commuting. Tubs can be a pain too so its a hard choice to make when deciding although no longer an issue as they no longer make them. Wonder what theyre bringing out next?

Marvellous. The Ultimates do look right tasty though.

Haha, I read that exact comment myself a while fantasy shopping. I am not 100% sure he is joking either, maybe he has a long commute.
