6-month braces option

    Hi,

Im wondering about the whole'6-month braces' thing. I was onto a dental place in Kildare(cant remember its name) and they told me it will cost an average of 3.5K - 4K for top and bottom. However, my bottom teeth are pretty much straight. I say pretty much as the teeth from back left to back right align up to a perfect normal pattern of how teeth are supposed to go, but two of them (inscisors at the front), are twisted about 30 degrees or so. (they dont stick out or anything, they are just twisted). What I am more concered about is the top teeth. Again all my teeth are perfectly straight and aligned properly apart from the front 4 which are in and out (if u know what i mean). The front 2 are prominent by about 6 or 7 mm or so, so there is quite an overbite going on there. Also, I have a little click in my jaw when i open my mouth really wide.

After reading this, would you think the 6-month brace option would/could be for me?

Also, has anyone got these '6-month braces' only on the top OR bottom and if so, how much did it cost?

    Cheers

    D

Braces require retainers to maintain the correct position. If braces are done in 6 months and retainers are not worn then the teeth will relapse.

We have cases going back to 2004 which still look perfect where the patient has followed instructions. 6 month braces does not mean they come off after 6 months and you are ok forever. Just as with regular braces you have to follow instructions.

These braces are huge in America and growing rapidly in the UK and Ireland.

    Hi,

I'm just back from the dentist since 1pm to collect my two retainers.

I had my 6 month brace (top teeth only) removed on Monday and had a mould taken of my mouth for my retainers. The majority of my teeth were also very straight so I didn't want to shell out 3 - 5K on them.

The total cost of my braces, including two retainers came to €1,330 and I couldn't be happier. I got them done in the city centre and am totally thrilled with the service and the result.

Hi I just posted this on another thread but I was reading this one and I think it is relevant to this one too.
I'm getting my 6 month braces in 2/3 weeks. It took me a long time to decide on the best option for me and this sites http://beaut.ie/blog/?p=6712# comments really helped me make up my mind. In relation to other comments on some threads I have seen from orthodontists I have the following comment. I am getting my 6 month braces with an orthodontist not a "quick fix dentist" and bonded retainers are included in the price. My issue is with the aesthetic element of my smile and not with my bite which is pretty ok so I didn't fancy wearing braces for 18 months/2 years and I wanted the fastest solution. I'm very nervous about getting braces though but hopefully it'll be ok and the time will fly by. Good luck anyway with whatever ye decide to do.

    Hi NicolaCork,
am glad you went with an ORTHODONTIST( i.e. a dentist who has done additional training usually full time for 3 years after their basic dental training -attaining a qualification that entitles them to call themselves an orthodontist and entitles them to be listed on the Specialists Register administered by the Dental Council). Indeed orthodontic treatment can be carried out in 6 months and if the problem is MINOR this can be done. However 18 months would be the average(i.e. some take shorter and some will longer -dependent on the severity etc.).

The "6 month thing " (sorry "6 month braces") is a very clever MARKETING ploy. You will note the places that usually use these are the practices with the biggest marketing budgets!!! "6 month braces" is exactly what a patient wants to hear - but in reality the person offering this is usually a dentist and not an ORTHODONTIST. The brackets and wires are no different no matter want yarn they might spin you as you relax in their surgery(no it's probably a DENTAL SPA). Of course they will move teeth and improve things - but if you want a GOOD RESULT - going to an orthodontist is your best option they have done the PROPER TRAINING and not the couple of days of "marketing" on the 6 month braces course. Also no orthodontist is taught about " 6 months braces" during their specialist training. It just ordinary braces taken off after 6 months - half the job for your teeth and your pocket a good bit lighter!!!!!!!

Yes chickenlegs I went with an ORTHODONTIST (whats with the patronising caps by the way???????????). He HAS done the proper training and I have checked his credentials and he recommended the 6 month smile option to me. As well as his orthodontic training he also has taken training in recent years on the 6 month braces option. If my only choice was to get braces for 18 months I would not have gotten any braces so I'm more than happy to part with the cash. Any qualms I had have been answered both by my ORTHODONTIST and others for whom the 6 month option has worked perfectly.

Why would he/she do a weekend course which is designed for general dentists when he/she has already done a three year postgraduate course on the same subject? There is no difference in the treatment they just take off the braces earlier leaving you more open to relapse!

Neither of the clinics mentioned in your link comments are orthodontists or have orthodontists working for them, PM me the name and I will let you know if they are specialists or general dentists.:)
