Driving from Split to Dubrovnik

    Hi all,
Myself and my girlfriend are heading to Croatia for 2 weeks. We arrive in Dubrovnik and are going up the coast via the islands to Split. We then intend to drive back to Dubrovnik to catch the flight.

Does anybody have any experience of that drive? How long does it take?

We were going to drive back on the day of the flight home but if there's more to do and see on the coast, we may stay a night somewhere.

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

My OH and I are doing something similiar but we are going up to Hvar and back to Dubrovnik by ship. I dont see the point in doing it by land.

You could get the bus to Dubrovnik from Split instead of driving, it would word out cheaper unless you plan to visit places by car.

I got the bus from Dubrovnik to Rijeka a few years ago - it takes forever - something like 15 hours. The coast road is really slow going. Allow more than enough time for it if you decide to drive. If getting the bus don't trust the bus timetables as to when you'll arrive in Dub.

Ye we're going to stay in Hvar, Korkula and a few other islands on the way up. It's just getting back to Dubrovnik we are unsure about.

Would like to drive and maybe stop at a couple of nice places if there were any on the mainland.

I know you have to pass through Bosnia at some point too. Anybody have any hassle with that before?

i'd say the drive from split to dubrovnik would be between 4 - 6 1/2 hours depending on how fast you are.

What you should do from Dubrovnik (if you have not plans yet) is Drive north along the coast for something like 1 hour then take a left at an area/town called Doli and look for a sign for Mali Ston or another place called Ston. These two towns are on the beginning of the Pelješac penisula. It's an area full of vine yards (I think mostly red wine). If you are hungry DEFINATELY stop in Mali Ston. Theres a cool little walk way past peoples houses in the town with loads of flowers and stuff. Anyway There is two places to eat in front of the sea. From where you park you have to walk around (north) about 300 metres. Either places is nice and they have the freshest sea food i've ever eaten. That area is famous for mussels i think or other shell fish(or all shell fish).

Anyway. From there drive up the penisula looking for a sign for Orebic (pronounced Orebice). You can stop in some vineyards on the way to buy some nice wine if you want (it's cheap and you can go down into the basement where the store the barrels, its cool). The Dingac vineyard is nice and there is a cool tunnel you can drive through to the sea. It's on the left driving north. There is a stretch of road just coming in Orebic which is one of the most pictureque drives I've ever done. It should have been in that top gear best road in europe thing. Anyway. you can see a few islands across the water. one is called Korcula. (This is one of the best views of the Croatian Islands I've ever had(on this drive).

Anyway, take the ferry across to Korcula (The main town in the island of Kocula (Korchula). You should stay there. It's called the Mini Dubrovnik or something along those lines. It is an amazing little town with loads of places to eat. There are a few good beaches for during the day and you can get a really good view if you stay in the right place. There are nice coctail bars too. And some markets during the day.

You can get the ferries up to split and some other places from Korcula. It's something like a 5 or 6 hour ferry ride buts its nice to sit back and relax outside if there weather is good.

If you're interested in accomodation for this place PM and i will send you the details of the person I stay with. IT was a really good location 5 metres from the sea(separated by a tiny road) with a balcony and a view of the main land so you can see all the boats a cruise liners going by and also all the wind surfers. There is a little place to swim just infront of it.

If you are just planning to go straight from Split to Dubrovnik, then I would suggest taking the bus. The bus ride is 4 hours, and it is quite pleasant with nice scenery to keep you entertained. To drive yourself would take you almost as long, only it would be more expensive. The coastal road from Split to Dubrovnik is nowhere near a highway, with many bends and low speed limits - why a bus does just as well.

It is true that you go through a small part of Bosnia between Split and Dubrovnik - but it is a 15 mins ride between two border posts. Absolutely no hassle, especially not for turists. Have done it many times myself.
