    Hey guys,

I've recently got a ps3 and got myself an external hard drive, and i'm wondering what way/type of files do i have to convert my movies into so that they will be playable on my ps3? I aim to just have all my dvds on the hard drive and be able to watch them that way

The PS3 plays a number of different filetypes and encodings. Don't know the full details but it plays (most) DivX encoded videos and the usual MP4's etc.

If you do not want to deal with conversions at all, try the PS3 Media Server

    EDIT: Wikipedia is your friend.

    MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
    MPEG-2 PS[e] (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
    MPEG-2 TS[e] (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2)
    VC-1[c] (.wmv)
    AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts)
    AVI[52]
    DivX,[e][f] DivX VOD
    XviD[e][f]
    Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
    Motion JPEG (μ-Law)
    MP4 Video
    MP4 via DivX AVI
    MP4 SP[g]
    MP4 AVC / MP4 H.264[h]
    DVD Video (region locked)
BD Video format on Blu-ray disc (region locked)
    BD Video format on DVD-ROM

absolutely, ps3 server linked above will stream anything to your machine, works straight outta the box, 10/10
and on the off chance it doesnt recognise a format, go to "transcode" folder pick the file again and it'll convert automatically

PS3 Media Server transcodes anything you can play on your PC so that will work. You can also directly save your transcoded files onto the PS3, however, it is very slow and the files are often huge.

Install the PS3 Media Server on your PC and set up what folders you want the server to display (like a My Music folder on your PC's HDD). Then turn on your PS3, use the Media Server option from the XMB and add your PC to the PS3's menu.

You can then browse the folders you selected and stream the videos, music etc. over your LAN network. Works better wired but wireless is fine too.

Similar to a program called TVersity (you may see that mentioned in threads like thisd) but imo, PS3 Media Server is better.
